Athletics this week

Students are continuing with their athletics unit as we build up to Sports Days.

G5 students have looked at ways to increase their speed.

Grade 4 students have spent time becoming the expert in one event are now in the process of teaching the rest of the class

Grade 2 and 3 students have been developing maths skills as they are measuring their performances

The KG students had a look at the hurdles, which were set out in straight lines and decided to make it bit more interesting by creating a big "road" of hurdles that went round in a loop and that included tunnels and ladders. This activity involved lots of negotiation as well as jumping.

Measuring in athletics - linking with Maths

During athletics lessons this week students have been involved in measuring their performances, which links in with their maths activities. Kindergarten students have been working out different ways to measure the distance of their throws and jumps. This has included counting steps, counting how many cones they jumped past and timing each with an iPad as they ran the hurdles.

They even compared their jump with how far a Praying Mantis can jump.

Students in G2 and 3 have been taking measurement to a more formal stage, and using recording sheets so that they can then take the data with them back to use in their maths lessons.

Athletics

Rubber chicken flinging, rocket throwing, putting the shot, sprinting, leaping hurdles, flying into long jump sand are the many learning experiences our KG - Gr 5 students are enjoying at the moment.

Athletics - becoming an expert.

We have started our Athletics units, which will culminate in our Sports Days at the end of the Semester. Our older students are in the process of becoming experts in events, and will be coaching others how to perform these events. One of the resources available to you student coaches is this slide show that we have put together, with links to videos, including a great set from Little Athletics Austral.

KG - Fundamental Movement Skills

In this unit the students have been developing a variety of basic movement skills including some ball skills. This morning we welcomed some Grade 6 students into our class and taught them to throw and catch with foam balls and our sticky Velcro balls.

Grade 1 - Throwing, Catching and UFOs

Grade 1 students have been learning different throwing and catching games and playing them with different types of ball. They wondered if you could play them with a frisbee, so we spent some time trying.

Reflecting back on the lesson the students noticed that you have to throw the frisbee differently from a ball; you have to catch the frisbee in a different way; most of them felt that it was harder to play the games; often the frisbee would not go straight like a ball when you threw it; the frisbee was like a UFO going through the air and surprisingly almost all of the students had seen a UFO!

Drone: Gr 5 Invasion Games Assessment

Grade 5 Invasion Games
For the first lesson Gr 5's played bench ball. As part of the teacher and student pre-assessment of skills we used a drone. The drone enabled us to get a bird's eye view of the full playing area.  The teachers and students will use the video's to look at skills such as:
  • Movement into space.
  • Movement to create space for ourselves and team.
  • Techniques used to keep and regain the ball.
  • Defense and Attacking strategies.
Students can think about:How do I create space for my teammates and myself?
  • What techniques can I use to help my team keep the ball?
  • What must you remember when attacking or defending?
  • Select and discuss which tactics and strategies might allow your game plan to be more successful?

G1 Invasion Games - Tuning in

The Ball Games / Invasion Games unit, which is our new unit, is something that most Grade 1 students have not participated in before. As part of our tuning in activities we watched the Secondary students playing some invasion games and discussed what we thought the Secondary students were doing.

The G1 students thought the Secondary students were good at catching the ball, they could throw the ball well and they ran around lots. We also noticed that they were good at sharing, waiting their turn and they didn't fight with each other!

We then went and practised our own throwing and catching with different types of balls.

Grade 5 Health Related Fitness

On 8 September Grade 5 students completed a fitness test. The 20 meter multistage fitness test is a commonly used running aerobic fitness test. It is also known as the 20 meter shuttle run testbeep or bleep test. When students had run as far as they gained an individual level number e.g; 5.4  This is an individual based fitness test where students are gaining an understanding of their own fitness. Students will complete this test several times throughout the year, in hope of improving their fitness levels. We strongly encourage all students to complete any extra exercise beyond the P.E. lessons. All students completed the "bleep" test with a positive attitude and enthusiasm.

Kindergarten PE - Friendships in PE

In our Cooperation Games unit we have been integrating with the homeroom Unit of Inquiry, by looking at some of the practical aspects of the Central Idea, which is:
Making and maintaining friendships is essential to our well-being.

In the activity below students had great fun saving the animals from the rising flood. They had to
learning how to share the trolly boards with their friends, which is not always easy as well as playing
safely.

In other activities we have focussed on working together with your friends to complete the task, such as transporting the balls around the obstacle course with out dropping them. The students have also had great fun playing together with the parachute.
