Grade 5 Adventure Challenge

During the unit, learners have been exposed to a number of team challenges. In order to complete the challenges, students had to exhibit the attributes of the learner profile and be open minded, thinkers, risk takers, and reflective.

One of the activities they had to do was "Crossing the River" where learners had to come up with strategies to bring one animal at the time from the other side of an imaginary river infested with crocodiles. Students were given different material such as ropes and scooters to get to the other side of the river without touching the water. In addition, there were some islands (mats) in the middle of the gym for them to stop by while trying to get on the other side of the river.

The other activity was called "Electric Fence" Students had to go over the figured electric fence without touching it. They were given a "magic hat" that could actually touch the fence so if they were to step on the fence would only be possible by stepping on the "magic hat."

Students learned that they had to communicate effectively in order to solve a problem. They also understood that everyone is part of their team and have responsibilities within their teams.

At the end of the lesson, grade 5 students reflected on the activities and how they were able to work and communicate effectively with their teams to be successful.

Yoga in Grade 1

Grade 1 students are learning that the choices people make have an impact on their health and well being.

In physical education, students are starting to recognize basic changes that occur in their bodies when exercising. They are also learning that their heart beat changes according to how active they are.

During today's yoga lesson, students realized that their heart beat was slower than after running or playing tag games.

It was great to see student's engagement during the whole lesson, and how they challenged themselves trying new yoga poses and had fun at the same time.

Cooperative Challenges in Grade 3

Grade three learners, in their unit of inquiry, "How We Organize Ourselves," are studying the importance of making decisions together to cooperate and get organized.

In Physical Education they are learning new ways to communicate as well as organize themselves while having to solve a problem or to complete a challenge.

Learners had to guide a peer who was blindfolded and couldn't see, by coming into an agreement of sounds that would help their partner to be aware of the space and where he could or could not go to.

Most of them chose to clap or click their fingers to have their partners moving and use some key words to have them stop moving. Safety was a big deal while doing this activity and students did a great job helping their partners to feel safe while moving into different spaces in the gym.

Their last challenge of the lesson was to lay down on the floor, put the blindfolds on and together create a human square. It required lots of communication and wasn't an easy task. After the lesson, we quickly reflected on the importance of listening to others as well as being a risk taker and trying their best to help their team to achieve their goals.

Creating our Essential Agreements in PE

In the first few lessons of the school year the students have been involved in creating their Essential Agreements for how they will learn best in PE. After thinking individually, students shared ideas with a partner, before sharing in groups. The students then decided which were the most important for our essential agreements.

First Day of PE in Grade 5

Today was the first day of physical education for some of the fifth grade classes.

Learners were challenged to organize themselves by height in a silent way, in other words, they couldn't talk to each other during the whole process. It was great to observe them working together to achieve the same goal.

I also challenged them to undo a huge human knot. It wasn't an easy task and we ended up having splitting students in two groups to undo both human knots.

Below you can see a couple of pictures of students in action.
