G2/3 Health Habits

This week in PE the Grade 2/3 students have been inquiring into what happens to their heart rate when they perform different types of exercises. They were given a bingo card of different activities and they choose the ones they wanted to play. Activities ranged from traditional sports such as Basketball and Football;  'play activities' such as hula hooping and playing on the climbing frame; fitness tasks with the running around school the most popular; computer lead tasks like "Fat Cat" and ever popular car race on the ipad; to yoga and other quieter activities.

After completing an activity students measure their heart rate on the ipad using my Heart Rate, before recording them on their sheet.

The conclusion - exercise increases our heart rate and the harder we exercise the faster our hear beats as our heart needs to beat faster to get the energy to our muscles.

Developing Physical Literacy - A Home & School Partnership

  1. Physical literacy is when an individual has the motivation, confidence, physical competence and  knowledge and understanding so that they can and choose to participate in purposeful  physical activity as part of their lifestyle.
  2. We work hard in the PE Department to plan lessons that the students enjoy and can succeed in, but that are also challenging them. These lessons help them develop their gross and fine motor skills. We also help students try to develop their knowledge and understanding of different techniques or strategies and tactics as well as involving them in a range of roles - players, coaches, officials. We do this across a range of different physical activities - gymnastics, invasion games, swimming, athletics, dance, ball games, cooperation activities - to help them become physical literate.
  3. Developing their Physical Literacy is a partnership and there are numerous way you can help your child - running around the garden, playing tag, playing catch, going swimming, bike rides, hula hooping, skipping, rolling on the bed - and much more.
  4. In the PE Department, we love this video.

PE Integration with Classroom work

This week we have been integrating PE activities with work that is happening in the classrooms.
KG students have been looking at what it means to be responsible in PE class - "sharing equipment", "caring for others", helping friends" and even driving our trollyboard cars sensible to avoid big crashes!

Grade 1 students have been putting their knowledge learnt about directions from Maths sessions into use when we have been playing direction games. We have also been carrying on with our Cooperative Games unit at the same time.

With G2/3 students we have linked up with their Healthy Habits Unit of Inquiry and been looking at the importance of including physical activity as part of a balance lifestyle. We have taken a fitness test to help students judge how fit they are and over the next few weeks will looking at how different type of activities effect our heart rates.

Finally our G4/5 students are looking at what to do when their beliefs are different from others in their group as they participate in a series of different group activities.

Welcome to a new school year!

Welcome to all our our students and their parents to the ISPP Elementary PE Department. We have planned for another fun pack year of activities - for the students and us!

This year we welcome Mr. Andy to the Elementary PE team. Students will either be taught by Mr Andy or Mr Ben and ably assisted by Mr Sam Ang, Mr Virak and Mr Narith. Please feel free to pop into school if you have any questions or email us, using the emails addresses on the right of this page.

PE Uniforms - we will be introducing PE uniforms this year, but they have not yet arrived from the manufacturer. Watch this space for details and in the meantime please can students come appropriately dressed with sport shoes and water bottles. For swim lessons students will need a swimsuit and towel. If they wish to wear goggles they should bring these from home. Please ensure items are labelled - we end up collected lots of goggles!

Swim Squad - We will be holding placement sessions for the Swim Squad after-school on Tuesday 12th August. More details can be found on the Swim Squad page.

We will be using this blog to post about event information, curriculum information and hopefully photos of the students in action. We also plan to use the blog as a site for links to support the units that we are teaching. Please sign up to follow this blog to ensure you get the regular updates straight into your inbox.
