Parachute Games in G1

Students in Grade 1 have started a Cooperation Games unit this week.

Together we developed a "Success Criteria" for students to know the learning targets for the lesson.

We came up with many I can statements:

                 Success Criteria

  • I can help my friends to unfold the parachute
  • I can use my hands to hold and shake the parachute
  • I can work with my friends to make a tent
  • I can listen to others while playing a parachute game
  • I can collaborate with my friends to have the balls "pop up" on the parachute
Learners went through an inquiry process by unfolding the parachute and realizing that it was upside down.

After a few minutes, and after trying out different ideas, Grade 1 learners were able to flip the parachute, unfold it completely, and start playing with it. They learned that in order to play with the parachute, they had to work together.

Grade 5 Invasion Games

This week we started an Invasion Games unit in Grade 5.

We played a couple of tag games to get learners thinking the best strategies to really support their partners in the games. As they played, they realized what worked well and what didn't. That made them think of new strategies to be successful.

As you know, invasion games are games where teams score when they move an implement into the opposing team zone and successfully attack that team's goal or target area. Examples of invasion games include soccer, basketball, football, hockey, etc.

Today's learning intention was:

To Create Space in Invasion Games by Using Fundamental Movements

We played several modified games where students, playing 3vs 3 or 4vs 4, had to keep the possession of the ball by moving into open spaces.

These games can be as simple as "Pass the ball five times to get a point"
Learners had to come up with the best tactics to keep the possession of the ball and they scored by passing the ball five times. As soon as the other team intercepted the ball the had to start again from zero.

In addition, as the games went on, we started to add challenges to some teams, such as no passing back to back, pass ten times, these student has to be receiving the last past, and so on.

We recorded some of the games, so students can get feedback of how they are creating space in order to keep the possession of the ball.

Grade 2 Invasion Games

Grade 2 students have just started an invasion games unit in PE. To start with we played some beanbag slide. The lessons focused on more than just playing the game.

Students came up with team plans to be successful, and some used the coachnote app to explain to others basic strategies.

We also had a look at the concepts of  teamwork, fair play (being a good winner and a good looser) and dealing with conflict that can arise in these types of games.

Over the next few weeks, we will be applying these concepts to a variety of different invasion games, as well at practicing the motor skills needed to be successful in these games.

KG - Imagination Unit

In PE the KG students are integrating with the home room teachers as we inquire into how we can use the arts to share ideas and explore our imagination. We will be looking at imagination through dance and yoga. Today was the first lesson and as we tuned in we spent it dancing, using our imagination to pretended to different animals and more.

Mr Mark's class particularly enjoyed dancing as puppies.

Ms Brittany's class liked being sharks.

Some of the students knew this song in Chinese and showed us the link on youtube so we could dance to the Chinese version as well

Ms Jan's class preferred the different monkey dances,

as well as free dances and the dance games at the end of the lesson

YAPP Events

Our first YAPP event will be Basketball and will take place at ISPP on Wednesday 4th of October from 2.30-4.30pm.

Students in Grade 3 to 5 who are interested in participating should collect a letter from their PE teacher and ask their parents to fill in the permission form.

Examining Mindfulness in PE

Grade 2 students have been looking at Mindfulness as their unit of inquiry. In PE we have integrated our activities, so that we have looked at Mindfulness from a PE perspective. Students have participated in a range of activities and recorded how it makes them feel as we have looked at how exercise effects our brain.  It has been a little tricky to separate physical feelings such as hot and sweaty from feelings in our brain such as calm or energised, but we have tried!

We have also tried activities that are hard to complete, to see how that makes us feel and try to put into place strategies to overcome these problems. 'Stop, have a drink then try again' was a popular strategy that we will be utilising in our future units. We have also looked at how exercise can help us if we are frustrated or angry and students have thought about what activity might help them in this situation.

At the end of the unit students had to choose and participate in activities that they feel would get their brain ready to learn for the rest of the day. Students choose to participate in a range of activities including dance, using the climbing wall, yoga, creating a fitness routine on the ipads, basketball and football

Developing Leadership

Grade 4 have just finished a unit on Leadership. They have participated in lots of different cooperative group activities, where they have all had a go at being a leader. The students have been reflecting on how they got on as being a leader and what they have learnt about leadership. The illustration above, highlights some of their thoughts on leadership.

Grade 5 Lead their Own Cooperative Games

We wrapped up our Adventure Challenge unit having learners creating their own cooperative games and teaching them to their peers.
It was great to see students being so creative as well as learning by leading new games.

Learners were striving to be knowledgeable, communicators, risk-takers, and open-minded.

There were many of the IB PYP Learner Attitudes happening constantly in class. Students were cooperative, had empathy, and lots of enthusiasm as they play each others game.

Click on the link below to see some pictures of learners leading all sort of cooperative games:

Grade 3 Parachute Games

As part of their UOI, "How We Organize Ourselves," grade three learners were playing with the parachute earlier this week.

In order to get started, learners had to get the parachute from the bag, unfold it, walk with it to a big space in the gym, and get themselves around the parachute to start playing. They realized that they couldn't just pull the parachute all at the same time, and had to communicate to be able to work as a team. Some students acted more as leaders, trying to figure out the best way for all of them to move with the parachute to a bigger space, while others were listening and coming to an agreement.

As they started playing, they took ownership of their own learning by having a leader who would get them started with the game. They knew that they had to hold the parachute and be focused on the activity to help their team to be successful.

Little by little, third graders are starting to understand the importance of communication and teamwork to achieve their goals.

Grade 1 Fitness Activities

Grade 1 students are aware that they heart beat increases as they do activities that require them to move faster, eg. running or playing tag games.

During today's session, students experienced basic body changes such as breathing faster, heart beating faster, and an increase of body temperature. In addition, they understood that when their body gets overheated they start sweating and they feel thirsty.

Learners did an excellent job while working independently in different activities and learning about making the right choices.

You can see below some pictures of the Grade 1 learners:
